Eros and Psyche
In Ancient Greek Mythology, Eros, the God of Love was originally perceived as only a cosmic force whose job was to organize and direct all of the elements of the Universe to create harmony out of chaos. But later this force became personified by the figure of the arrow shooting angel who directed the dreams of human desire.
This organizing force is an inaccurate representation, for LOVE is what is responsible for the laws that bring order to all life.
The Love Story - Eros and Psyche
Psyche was a beautiful woman, so enchanting that the people of her father's kingdom started giving her the praise that they had previously heaped on Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. This enraged Aphrodite, so she ordered her son, Eros, to punish Psyche. Before Eros could carry out his mother's wishes, however, an oracle warned Psyche's father, telling him that the only way to appease the Love Goddess would be to abandon Psyche on top of a mountain that was inhabited by a monster.
Psyche was terrified, but she honored her father's wishes. She waited, frightened and alone; unaware that Eros was on his way to torment her. But even Eros did not know what was going to happen next.
Due to her extraordinary beauty, or just an accidental prick of his arrow, Eros fell madly and immediately in love with Psyche. Instead of tormenting her, he had the West Wind lift her up and carry her to his castle.
Eros placed one condition on their love. He did not reveal his identity to her, and he demanded that Psyche never see his face. Although this seemed to be a strange condition, Psyche agreed, she and Eros lived happily together. Psyche had promised never to cast her eyes upon him, she would be well taken care of and her every desire would be met. Eros left each morning before dawn and came home only under the cover of darkness but Psyche was very content. She spent each evening with her loving husband, and each day she lived like a princess in the castle she now called home.
In time however, she became bored during the day. She invited her sisters and friends over for a visit, partially to distract her and partially to show off her wealth and happiness to them. Her sisters and friends were not impressed. Envious and resentful, they tried to find things wrong with Psyche's life. They told her that if she was not allowed to see her husband, it must mean that he was an ugly and hideous beast. She responded by saying that he was far too gentle and loving to be a monster. They continued to nag her until Psyche herself began to lose faith.
In a moment of weakness, while Eros was sleeping, Psyche lit a lamp to check out her husband. To her delight he was not a monster, but a beautiful face of the God of Love. In her excitement she spilled some hot oil from the lamp on his shoulder waking him up. Eros was appalled by this betrayal and disappeared. He took away the castle and everything in it, leaving Psyche alone on a desolate mountain.
Psyche had lost faith. She had everything she could desire, as if that was not enough. When doubt and fear crept in was when she lost the love that was so dear to her.
This is the classic response of the law of LOVE. Real Love cannot be cultivated or protected in an environment of fear. Fear suffocates the love that may be present and sabotages the pursuit of love elsewhere. If you want to create love in your life, you must look at your motivations and the feelings it creates. Without self-trust, you will find yourself focusing only on what you love, constantly living in doubt and assumed limitation. In such an environment Love's intention to expend will be blocked by your own perception of limitation.
You must decide that you are going to make your own decisions about who you are and what you want. You have to be secure within yourself and know with all your heart that you already have everything your heart desires... You must not let other people dictate what or who you should LOVE... It is your heart and nobody knows it better than you. Everything that you need to know lies within your heart. Trust yourself and your divine intuition. Tapping into that power is the greatest gift you can ever give to yourself...
